CCJR Legislative alert for 1/6/17

Dear Members, We have reached the start of the 2017 session. Over the last few months, our Legislative Policy Committee has worked on a full slate of bills. We have decided to take a position on a number of them. The first hearings have been scheduled for Wednesday 1/11

CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY, Room 204, LOB
10:00 a.m. HB 278, repealing criminal defamation.
10:30 a.m. HB 100, relative to the definition and use of toy smoke devices.
11:00 a.m. HB 228, relative to transportation of alcoholic beverages by a minor.
1:00 p.m. HB 153-FN, requiring a manslaughter charge for heroin and fentanyl dealers when the user dies.
1:30 p.m. HB 76, relative to involuntary administration of medication to inmates with mental illnesses.
2:00 p.m. HB 143, relative to recommittal of a prisoner by the parole board.
2:30 p.m. HB 282, relative to a prisoner’s participation in the work release program.

Executive session on pending legislation may be held throughout the day, time permitting, from the time the committee is initially convened.

The highlighted bills are two that we have taken a supportive position on. We need to pack the chamber with people to show that these bills need to pass. These bills will allow the Parole Board and DOC to keep people moving out of the prison and onto parole. this would have the effect of reducing the state budget in the long term. If you wish to testify on these bills please call Wanda Duryea at 603-755-1153.
